Pensioner dies in horror crash

A PENSIONER has died after his car collided with a 7.5 tonne tipper truck on the A120 near Great Bromley.

A blue A Class Mercedes and green Iveco lorry were involved in the smash near the junction with the A133.

The road was closed in both directions after the collision yesterday, at 3.35pm, while emergency services dealt with the incident. It remained shut through rush hour and into the evening.

Joy Hale, spokeswoman for the East of England Ambulance Service, said two doctors, a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance and the air ambulance were called to the scene.

She said: “A man was declared dead at the scene. The lorry driver was also taken to hospital with a suspected injury to his leg.”

Two fire crews from Manningtree and one crew from Colchester were also called to the scene.

Police said the victim was 80-year-old Kee Wah Lee, from Hadleigh, Suffolk.

The tipper truck was travelling on the A120 towards Colchester. It is believed the Mercedes car entered the A120 from Little Bromley Road.

The driver of the tipper truck - a 59-year-old man from Colchester - suffered minor knee injuries but was badly shaken. He was taken to hospital by work colleagues for a check-up.

John Brown, who represents Ramsey and Parkeston on Tendring Council, said the incident highlighted the need for action to be taken to make the road safer.

He said: “It’s a horror road. I can’t believe people have got to keep losing their lives or getting seriously hurt while the Highways Agency don’t do anything about it. It’s terrible.

“How many people have got to die or get seriously hurt before something is done?”

Motorcyclist Mark Britton, from Colchester, died after a crash on the A120 near Great Bromley in October.

Motorist Carole Smith, 69, of Great Ormond Street, London, was given a two-year driving ban and sentenced to a 180-hour community order at Colchester Magistrates’ Court last Tuesday for causing Mr Britton’s death.

Stanway traffic police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with any information to contact them on 0300 333 4444.
