ACOL Bridge Club.

AT the meeting on June 8, 24 boards were played for the Floss & Geoff Offord Trophy. The results were: 1 B.Johnston/ T Carton; 2 F Thomson/ S Pond; 3 A Smith/ E Hill.

Fuchsia Society.

AT the recent meeting, the beginners’ class were given tips on entering into the fun classes at our forthcoming show and all members were then given a talk entitled ‘There’s something about fuchsias’ by one of our best growers, Bill Wye.

Members were also reminded of a barbecue to be held on June 20 and at the next meeting, on July 2 at 7pm, beginners will be given more information on preparing for the show, and other members look forward to a talk by Chris Miller from the Suffolk Punch Trust.

Visitors welcome to attend society meetings, which are held at Holland Public Hall.


RAF Police Association.

THE Essex and Suffolk branch of the Royal Air Force Police Association meets at the RAF Association Club in Howbridge Road, Witham, Essex on the first Tuesday of every every month.

Some meetings incorporate guest speakers, games nights (RAFPA versus RAFA) quiz nights etc, and at others visits are arranged. In the past, these have included a trip to the RAF police working dogs trials, Lakenheath air base, Essex police HQ and museum in Chelmsofrd, and the city of London police museum and stables.

Diabetes UK.

THE next branch coffee morning will take place at Trinity Methodist Church on June 23 between 9.45am-11.45am, not at 11.45am as previously printed.


Contract Bridge Club.

TWENTY-five boards were played at the meeting on June 11. The results were: N/S, 1 B Vertgen/ L Bussell; 2 S Pond/ C Mannix. E/W, 1 E Ellis/ H Turner, 2 C Bruce/ F Nash.

Birdwatching Society.

NO nightingales appeared at the society recent dawn chorus trip, but there were bullfinches, cuckoos, blackcaps and whitethroats, and sightings included sparrowhawks and barn owls.

Tree creepers nesting near the car park gave a good start to the trip to Bradfield Woods in Suffolk, where the medieval practive of coppicing continues from medieval times. The bluebells and wild flowers were breathtaking and 29 species of birds were seen or heard.

The Tuesday Birders went to Chalkney Wood where chiff chaff and blackcaps were heard, as well as an enormous badger holt and a pond full of newts.

Americans wanted!

CORNER Lodge residential care home for the elderly are holding a ‘Stars and Stripes’ celebration day on July 2 and would like to invite any Americans who either live or are staying in the area to join in the celebrations.

The event is from 10.30am-4.30pm. There will be live entertainment and a barbecue lunch.
