Business group says no to parking charges

A BUSINESS group has called for proper enforcement of parking restrictions on a Colchester shopping street rather than the introduction of charges.

Colchester Council is investigating putting parking meters on Crouch Street, where shoppers currently enjoy 30 minutes’ free parking.

Ian Wicks, chair of the North East Essex Federation of Small Businesses, said he though the proposal would be bad for business.

“Experience shows that when such parking charges are introduced local shops suffer,” he said.

Parking meters? What, are they in some sort of time wharp?

This isn't the 1960s, it's the second decade of the 21st century.

Sorry, didn't think.

It'd be a way of milking the motorist again - with the added benefit of killing off business in Crouch Street.

Yes. Excellent idea.

Why would the council inforce the parking restrictions instead of putting a pay and display meter in? Monitoring the road to move vehicles on costs money where as a meter makes money and it's all about money, not the shoppers and not the shop keepers.

Even with a meter, they will still need to monitor the parking. The cost of the meters is going to be prohibative. CBC should just leave it as it is. There are enough parking attendants walking between South Town and the Dutch Quarter to keep an eye on this already and certainly no need to waste more money of this hair brained idea.

I only shop in Crouch Street if I'm on foot. If I'm in a car experience tells me I will just drive round in circles like many others waiting for a parking place or find the street clogged up by people parking on a double yellow line. How many other people never think of using Crouch Street because of the ridiculous parking situation? Restricting parking to a paid 30-minute stay might increase usage.

Is it the parking situation they are investigating or the three words "Shoppers", "Free parking" & "Enjoy" that they feel needs to be investigated?????
