A HUNGRY drink driver found more than twice the legal limit after sinking pints with his pals has been banned from the roads for 20 months.

Jack Hayward crashed his Volkswagen Golf into a roundabout on the A133 close to Weeley Crematorium, smashing into some nearby trees.

Police were called to the scene but could not find anyone in the car but saw the airbags had been deployed.

Hayward, 23, was located at a nearby petrol station.

Officers breathalysed Hayward who had 83mcgs of alcohol per 100mls of breath. The legal limit is 35.

On the way to the police station with officers, Hayward said he had only driven because he was hungry and wanted to get something to eat.

In custody he was searched and a small amount of cocaine was found in his jacket.

Hayward, of Byng Crescent, Thorpe, told officers a friend had been using the jacket and he had no idea the drugs were there.

At Colchester Magistrates’ Court, Hayward admitted drink driving and possession of cocaine.

Representing himself, dad-to-be Hayward said he regretted the incident.

He said: “I made a silly mistake that day.

“I massively regret what I did and will have to pay the consequences for the rest of my life.

“It was a stupid mistake. I have just moved into my first house with my fiancee and am going to be a dad next month.

“A driving ban will impact on everything but I know what I did was stupid.

“They were not my drugs but I was in possession of them when I was arrested so I accept the situation.”

Magistrates told Hayward the courts take a dim view of people who drink drive and then crash their cars.

As well as being banned from driving he was fined £200 for the motoring offence and £387 for the drugs which were found on October 28.

He must also pay £85 costs and a £38 victim surcharge.
