CLACTON MP Douglas Carswell used his last question at Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) to ask the PM how she will assure Ukip voters that she will follow through on Brexit.

Mr Carswell defected from the Tories to Ukip before quitting the party last month to become an independent MP.

Mr Carswell, who will not be seeking re-election at the General Election on June 8, has declared it is “job done” for Ukip after Prime Minister Theresa May officially triggered the UK’s withdrawal from the EU in March.

He added that he will back whoever is the Conservative candidate in Clacton at the election.

Speaking in the House of Commons on Wednesday, he asked Prime Minister Theresa May how she would convince Ukip voters that the country will be free from EU control.

He asked: “What assurances can the Prime Minister give to the 3.8 million people who voted Ukip at the last election that if she is Prime Minister after June 8, the United Kingdom will become a sovereign country again, living under our own Parliament and making our own laws?”

In response, Mrs May said: “I will give an assurance to all those people who voted for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union - and to all people across the country, regardless of how they voted, who now want to see this Government getting on with the job of Brexit and making a success of it - that we want to see control of our borders, control of our laws and control of our money, and that that is what we will deliver.”

Wednesday's PMQs was the last one to take place before Parliament is dissolved on May 3 ahead of the election campaign.
