DOGS are known to be a man’s best friend and Julie Small is harnessing this quality to tackle social isolation.

Barking Mad Tendring and Colchester is part of a nationwide branch of dog care providers which offers people the chance to have a pooch at home.

Franchisee Mrs Small, 52, became the owner in February when Tracy Saer, now responsible for Sudbury, decided to halve her share.

She would like to boost the team of 20 dog hosts by at least another six to meet growing demand.

For people who are unable to look after a dog full-time, it means they can enjoy the social aspects of walking and the company of a part-time pet.

She said: “Our headquarters has done a lot of work with Age Concern and Age UK and found having a dog on a part-time basis really does tackle loneliness.

"It’s a reason to get out of bed in the morning and a good way to keep fit.

“Also it’s the concept people really like because their dog is going to someone’s home and being treated like their own pet, rather than being in a kennel.

“Lots of hosts are older people who have had dogs previously and don’t want to commit again, but are suffering from doglessness.”

Clacton and Frinton Gazette:

Dogs can be with a host family anything from two days to six weeks.

Former HR professional Mrs Small moved to Clacton in 2001 with husband Steve and has been a host for four years.

It was when one of their Golden Retrievers Benn died that they reached out to Barking Mad.

She said: “Josh, our other dog, was broken-hearted. I wanted to give him some company.

“We loved hosting and it gave Josh a new lease of life. Then we met Lilly, a little black Labrador who has become a part of our family.

“Sadly, we lost Josh to old age about 18 months ago and just when we said we wouldn’t get any more dogs, Rennie, a red Retriever, appeared in our lives and we couldn’t say no.”

Anyone over 18 can sign up with Barking Mad after being vetted process to make sure the applicant and their home is suitable.

You can also have another canine at home provided they are happy to make new friends.
