SUBSIDISED training for would-be swimming teachers means you could qualify on the cheap.

Residents in Tendring are being offered the chance to train as a fully qualified teacher for £100 from Clacton Leisure Centre.

The courses start later this month and will save people almost £1,000.

Selected places are being subsidised by the Swimming Trust, one of Tendring Council chairman Jayne Chapman’s chosen charities for her year in office.

Ms Chapman has already raised more than £6,000 for the trust through various events.

She said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to set themselves on the path to a new career at a relatively small cost.

“I’m delighted the Swimming Trust and the leisure centre have teamed up to make this possible.“

"As we’re a seaside area it’s very important our children learn to swim, and for that to happen we need to have enough qualified instructors.”

The courses are particularly aimed at people living in West Clacton, Jaywick and Harwich East.

Those taking part will need to be available to attend training between February 20 and 23.

To qualify it is also necessary to complete 30 hours of volunteering at a pool.
