Hundreds packed Clacton town centre for what must have been Clacton's biggest and brightest Christmas lights switch on in years.

Four hours of fun entertained the masses this afternoon, with X Factor star Stevi Ritchie flicking the switch at 5pm today.

He is also appearing as Chester the Jester in Sleeping Beauty at the Princes Theatre and at the switch on introduced some of his panto co-stars.

The Royalette Twirling Team, Clacton Ukuleles and Cl Cheerleaders were also on the bill, and there was music from local singers Gabrielle, Tracy Moorhouse, Essex Vocal Services, Tuppence and trio Stu Ross, Viv and Lawrie, who played at this summer's airshow.

Almost 50 illuminated solar-powered Christmas trees have been put up on lamp posts around the town centre this year for the synchronised switch-on.

They replaced old lights which were wearing out.

Clacton Town Partnership chair Graham Webb was present watching the spectacle, saying the festivities had got off to a great start.

Father Christmas also enjoyed himself, who looked suspiciously like one of our Tendring councillors. He was joined by an elf, who also seemed familiar.

Clacton's entertainment is due to run from 2pm to 6pm. Deejay Ronnie S will also be performing all day.

It comes as other Tendring settlements have staged their festivities.

Thorpe had a successful late night shopping extravangza last night, with many stalls adding to the attraction.

Santa also made a guest appearance in Thorpe High Street.

The Big Man in Red also made a guest appearance last night as Walton also staged its own late night shopping and festive celebrations bringing joy to the whole town.

He was also due to make a furrther visit to Walton this morning at its marina at the end of Mill Lane.
