A PICTURE taken in Brightlingsea has been shortlisted in a competition to raise awareness of selfie safety.

The National Accident Helpline asked entrants to submit selfies from their favourite locations, and asked them what measures they took to take it safely.

Natacha Bines, 30, who is from Brightinligsea, pictured herself in the water off the coast of here town.

She said: "I love paddle boarding, and this picture was taken when some friends and I went for a sunset paddle and swim.

β€œIn the water, you always need to be aware of your surroundings, be comfortable in the water, have respect for how quickly conditions like the tide, weather and current can change, and ensure people know where you are.

"We made sure we did this before we went for our swim and paddle.”

Marketing director of the National Accident Helpline, Beth Powell said: "We all want to capture great memories with a selfie, but we are urging selfie-takers, young and old, to look up from their devices and pay attention to the potential risks around them, before getting the perfect shot.

"This way, we can create great memories and stay safe."
