Great Clacton Residents Association (GCRA) is considering standing its own candidates in future council elections.

The move follows residents raising a raft of issues at last weekend’s six monthly meeting.

A packed Association Hall on Valley Road heard the suggestion from the neighbouring Holland Residents Association, which already stands its own candidates.

GCRA Treasurer Barrie Coker said:” I think it’s probably a good idea if you have residents that live in the area that on the council, trying to do the best for the district rather than follow the national party line. That’s a better way forward,” he said.

However, he said this was no criticism of two of its committee members, district councillors Mark Stephenson (UKIP) and Mick Skeels Sr (Conservative).

Residents also raised concerns over litter, parking, and government recycling policies.

Despite the non-partisan nature of the meeting, Clacton MP Douglas Carswell spoke for more than an hour, taking questions from the audience.

Mr Coker said the MP’s presence probably boosted turnout at the Saturday meeting.

Mr Carswell discussed some of the actions to improve the area and his top priorities for it. This included expanding the availability of GP services, as well as a range of other issues which were bought up by local residents.

Afterwards, the MP said that he “really enjoyed the meeting and it was a great success.”

This Saturday, association members and supporters will be picking up litter in the alleyways around St Johns Church from 10am. Those wanting to take part can contact chairwoman Anne Paulizky on (01255) 223039.
