A RESIDENT has slammed irresponsible fly-tippers for ruining a holiday park with huge mounds of rubbish.

The greensward at Bel-Air Chalet Estate in St Osyth has been turned into a “shameful dump” over the last few weeks.

A huge mountain of rubbish has been piled in the middle of the grass, including mattresses, broken furniture and building materials.

Jan Vincent, secretary of the Bel-Air Chalet Owners’ Association, has spoken out against the culprits.

She said: “If travellers had come in and left anything like this kind of mess people would be outraged and up in arms.

“Unfortunately we believe our problem has been caused by some people living on the estate, or nearby residents.

“It is a filthy habit and it has become a real ongoing problem on the greensward leading up to the St Osyth sea wall.

“There have been several heaps of garbage dropped there.

“It contains all sorts of things. Building materials, doors, mattresses, furniture suites.

“Some of it gives off a real smell and it is a magnet for rats.

“Occasionally it has been set fire to, which is a really dangerous hazard and leaves all kinds of fumes coming off it.

“It is absolutely outrageous that this is being allowed to happen.”

Mrs Vincent, 66, has approached local councillors about the fly-tipping mess, but has been told it is on private land and the council cannot help.

Recently she confronted a man who arrived in a van to add to the pile.

The following day she found the tyres on her car slashed and super glue put into the locks.

She added: “I caught one person emptying a van and explained he was fly-tipping, but he tried to tell me he had permission to dump it there and gave me the usual abuse.

“But it is private land and I have been in contact with the land owners who have confirmed that no one should be dumping anything there.

“The vandalism to my car is either connected to the confrontation or a huge coincidence.

“I can’t believe the coward who did it has a problem with me trying to keep this site clean and tidy.

“The people fly-tipping need to take a good look at themselves.

“I have had my chalet here for more than 30 years and it is heartbreaking that a once very pretty and respectable holiday park has become the shameful dump it is now.”
