THE devastated husband of a hit-and-run smash victim has slammed the “joke of a sentence” after her killer walked free from court.

Cyril Fayers, 90, “lied and lied and lied” to try and get away with causing the death of loving wife and mother Barbara Cyfrowicz, a court heard.

But he escaped with a suspended sentence, despite fleeing from the scene and weaving a web of deceit in a bid to cover up his crime.

The victim’s husband, Graham Bristow, was stunned when Fayers was allowed to leave court a free man.

He is now launching an appeal to the Attorney General to have the sentence reviewed.

“It just left me speechless,” said Mr Bristow, 60.

“The judge must have said ‘justice must be seen to be done’ on numerous occasions.

“She called Fayers a coward and deceitful. Then she gave him eight months for killing her and 12 months for perverting the course of justice but it was all suspended.

“Where is the justice?”

Clacton and Frinton Gazette:

  • Cyril Fayers tried to cover up crime

Mrs Cyfrowicz, 54, was using a pedestrian crossing on Frinton Road, Kirby Cross, when she was knocked over on Boxing Day 2014.

The crash happened just yards from her home in Bemerton Gardens.

Fayers failed to stop to help her and she died from her injuries in hospital the next day.

He admitted causing death by careless driving, perverting the course of justice, failing to stop and failing to report a crash.

Mr Bristow criticised the sentence and the judge.

“The whole thing has been a nightmare," he said.

"It leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I’m going to appeal to the Attorney General about this joke of a sentence.”
