A CANCER victim’s ashes were shot into the sky in a firework to cap a huge charity event in her memory.

Sharon Haggis, 48, of Walton, died last year after a four-year battle with cancer.

Friends and family organised a special celebration of her life with a fun day event over the weekend.

Dubbed ShazFest, the event attracted more than 300 people and included a bouncy castle, fishing for youngsters, a tombola, stalls, raffles, a bar and barbecue, as well as live music and entertainment.

Friend Debbie Byles said: “It is almost exactly a year since Sharon died and this was an amazing tribute to her.

“Sharon was always the life and soul of the party. She was always positive and never let the illness get her down. She was a sparky character and she would have loved this.”

The event ran through Saturday and was so busy, organisers ran out of beer.

Local pubs the Red Lion in Kirby le Soken and the Bath House in Walton came to the rescue by topping up the supplies.

A big fireworks fan, one of Sharon’s final wishes was for her ashes to be put into a firework and launched as part of a spectacular display.

The end of the event was capped by a huge fireworks display that saw Sharon’s final wish fulfilled.

ShazFest raised an incredible total topping £8,500. Cash will be donated to Cancer Research UK and St Helena Hospice. People can still donate at justgiving.com/shazfest
