CLACTON MP Douglas Carswell was “ticked off” by a Parliamentary official after using a mobile phone app to broadcast the state opening of Parliament.

The avid Twitter user was broadcasting via the live video streaming app Periscope during the Queen’s Speech today.

It is understood that Mr Carswell refused to back down after being reprimanded in the Central Lobby between the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

Mr Carswell said: “I did the first ever Periscope broadcast from deep inside the Houses of Parliament.

“There are 34,000 people following me on Twitter, many who are young people who are fed up with politics.

“It is a good thing if I can reach them through slightly different means. I showed people a view of the Queen’s Speech from a MPs perspective.

“One or two of the Commons officials got a bit cross with me, but I refused to back down.

“If the BBC is allowed to broadcast here, then I’m going to broadcast here. When I sent the first ever Tweet from the House of Commons it attracted the same kind of response.”

The Queen’s Speech – which sets out Government legislation for the coming year – will pave the way for an in/out referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union and a legal requirement for anyone working 30 hours a week or less on the minimum wage to be taken out of income tax altogether.

“There are things in the Queen’s Speech that I am delighted about,” said Mr Carswell.

“The EU referendum is something I have been pushing for all my adult life – and it’s finally happening.

“I’m also very excited about the idea of taking people on low incomes out of income tax. It will be a tax break for a lot of people in Clacton.

“The extension of child care would also be really good. As a dad of a six-year-old, I know it is a big issue locally.

“But I am not happy about the failure to act on immigration or energy. The Government’s immigration bill is designed to distract us.”
