SOME grandparents have to make do with the odd fleeting visit from their grandchildren.

But maths whizz Bob Pennifold, who still teaches at a Frinton school at the incredible age of 87, now works alongside his own granddaughter.

Bob was once in the Royal Navy with his three older brothers, before returning home to become a policeman.

He retired from the force in 1973 and spent a few years enjoying his retirement... but that was long enough for him.

Dragged into teaching by the headmaster at his wife’s school in 1977, he has never even considered giving up in almost four decades.

Bob started out at Colbayns in Clacton, before moving over to Tendring Technology College, where he still teaches three days a week.

He said: “I’m only part-time now, but I just don’t want to retire. I never fancied it.

“I can’t resist being here and educating. Helping to teach each new wave that comes through my class is incredibly satisfying.

“After such a long time I will be packing up shortly, but even now it is only because the school’s budget is tight.

“If it was up to me, I would stay here forever.”

Bob has now been joined at Tendring Technology College by granddaughter Kaciey Pennifold, who is completing her first year teaching REP (religion, ethics and philosophy) at the school.

She is 64 years younger than him.

Bob said: “She started teaching here in June and it has been wonderful to work in the same place.

“I count myself very lucky. I’m sure some people have to go long stretches of time without seeing their grandchildren.

“I’m so proud seeing her come in and do so well as a teacher too.”
