POLICE have launched a crackdown to help rid communities of homes being used as drug factories.

A booklet has been produced and will be distributed to homeowners and letting agents in an effort to catch drug manufacturers.

It gives a rundown of the tell-tale signs to help people spot properties that are being used to manufacture drugs.

Earlier this year, a spate of suspected drug factories were raided around Clacton, including one in Portsmouth Road and another in High Street, Thorpe.

Officers hope the new leaflet will encourage landlords and residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

Sgt Pete Gerard, of Walton Police, said: “This guide outlines how property managers, landlords and owners can work with Essex Police to tackle drug problems in rental properties and prevent problems for local residents.

“There is no simple solution to the problem of illegal drug use, manufacturing or trafficking.

We all need to work together to make the community safer.”

The indicators included in the leaflet include a strong smell of chemicals or air fresheners, as well as blacked out windows and visible wiring that has been tampered with.

It encourages residents to look out for tip-offs such as people taking regular smoking breaks outside the property, while landlords could be alerted by a spike in electricity bills or high humidity in the property.
