AN undercover dogwatch patrol has taken to Holland-on-Sea’s new beaches to crack down on irresponsible dog owners.

Six members of staff from Tendring Council took to the seafront in plain clothes to keep an eye on owners.

They carried out investigations last week, walking stretches of beach from 6am to 8am and 5pm to 7pm each day.

Spot-checks were organised after concerns were raised over dog mess left on Holland’s new beaches.

The workers observed 87 owners and 67 dogs over the course of the week, but did not spot any offenders.

Council communications boss Nigel Brown said: “Obviously, the teams could not cover the entire stretch all day, but at the times they went down there, owners were picking up after their pets.

“The dog wardens even spotted one man they had previously issued a fine to – but he also cleared away.

“Hopefully, the minority of dog owners who were involved are acting more responsibly for the sake of everyone, and we hope that this will continue.”

The operation was in addition to the normal patrols that are carried out on a regular basis.

The council also wants people to report any offending owners.
