FRUSTRATED drivers were caught up in traffic chaos around Clacton after the main road in and out of the town was closed for daytime repair work with little notice.

Queues of cars were left crawling around country lanes after the A133 between Weeley roundabout and Little Clacton was closed on Tuesday.

An Essex Highways spokesman said the work could not be carried out at night and the peak-hour work had been unavoidable.

He said: “We were carrying out surface dressing work on the A133 Weeley bypass on Tuesday.

“The process can’t be undertaken at night or after dark because the road surface temperature becomes too cold for the bitumen material to bond properly with the carriageway.”
