A BID to transform a former Frinton estate agent office into a new coffee shop and wine bar has been met with a sobering response.

An application has been launched to convert the empty shop in Connaught Avenue.

The new owners want to create a barista-style coffee shop and bar, serving hot snacks as well as beer, wine and cocktails.

But the plan divided opinion among town councillors when they discussed the proposals.

Councillor Brian Johnson was adamant Frinton should prevent more eateries moving in and creating a “cafe culture” at the expense of retail shops.

He said: “This has got to stop. There are so many of these plans springing up and if we are not careful there will be nothing left of our Connaught Avenue.

“Why should our beautiful town fall in line just because every other place wants to be like this?

“This is not just another seaside town. It’s a constant battle to keep Frinton as near as we can to how it was before, but it is worth doing."

Concerns were also raised over extra noise during the evenings affecting families living above shops in Connaught Avenue.

Not everyone was against the plans.

Some councillors said residents living above high street shops should expect some noise, while the proposals would provide Frinton with a vibrant new shop, provide more choice and fill empty premises.

The council was split on allowing the change of use, but mayor Iris Johnson’s casting vote meant it was recommended for refusal.

Tendring Council will make the final decision.
