THE decision to move Walton’s post office has been explained to town councillors.
The post office is set to move from a dedicated building, owned by community group Walton Forum in the town’s High Street, to the Co-op supermarket across the road.
Walton councillor Jack Robertson met Post Office officials to clarify the situation.
He said: “The postmasters will soon no longer get paid a yearly salary. They will be paid per transaction.
“The move will extend opening hours, so there will be more scope for transactions.
“The current postmaster also would not agree to the changes and has a lease on the current building until 2016, so a change had to be made.”
Councillor Jan King expressed concerns, fearing a move away from a dedicated building would make the service less sustainable.
But fellowWalton councillor Delyth Miles said residents to whom she had spoken were hopeful it could lead to an improved service.
