OLD caravan site buildings have been demolished while work has started on creating roads and sewers to pave the way for new developments.
The old Martello Caravan Camp site has been cleared of all but one of its central buildings, which were once bustling with holidaymakers.
The Wellington Suite still remains, but the rest – including laundry facilities and an arcade – have been flattened by a bulldozer.
Workers are now creating roadways and a new sewerage system on the cleared site, paving the way for new housing and shops.
Stephen Sibley, boss of Martello Land and Properties, said: “The excavation for the roads and sewers makes everything else possible and that is now well under way.
“Getting rid of the old structures has made the world of difference to the site. You can actually see the Martello Tower for the first time in about a century.
“This is essential to everything else going ahead and goes hand in hand with the more noticeable building work which is yet to come.”
Plans have been launched for several stages of development on the former caravan park.
Housing company Taylor Wimpey has just released designs for 250 houses on the rear of the site.
Retail chain Aldi has already announced plans for a store at the front of the site, and there is room for another large shop unit.
A block of sheltered housing flats and a medical centre are also planned for a third section of the site, near the Martello Tower.
