A PILOT project to give youngsters hands-on training while revamping two buildings has been launched in Walton.

Community interest company the Makiguchi Initiative is heading to Walton and is in the process of buying two properties in the town.

Bosses have now started a crowdfunding bid to raise £5,000, which will go towards work on the buildings.

The idea is for people to make donations in return for getting hands-on training as part of the revamp.

Those donating £40 to the fund will have the chance to work with an expert as they carry out jobs, including basic plumbing, plastering, brickwork and painting and decorating.

Reaching the £5,000 target will let the company hook up water, electricity and a phone line at both properties while making them secure.

It will also pay for a structural survey and fund planning applications. Further donations will go towards revamping properties and turning them into homes.

Makiguchi Initiative bosses also plan to seek funding from other sources to take on two apprentices on a oneyear contract.

Construction director John Hindes said: “This project aims to train young people in construction, starting in the Walton area, where there is a real lack of work and apprenticeships for young people.

“The project will benefit the local community in two ways – by training its youth and by providing affordable housing.”

The company has not yet confirmed which buildings it is looking at.

Spokesman Michael Isaac said: “We need your help to get this exciting project off the ground.

“We are starting small and aim to roll out the project across the country within the next two years.”
