A CONTROVERSIAL new housing estate within the Frinton gates has been given the green light, sparking anger among objectors.

Developer Persimmon Homes already had outline planning permission to build 37 new houses at a site off Wittonwood Road.

It has now been given full approval by Tendring Council.

The former reservoir site is the last open space big enough for a major development inside the Frinton gates.

Plans for Wittonwood Road were discussed by Tendring Council last month, but councillors deferred making a decision so they could hold more talks with the developers.

Concerns were raised that the plans were for too many homes and did not include pavements.

Persimmon Homes agreed to add some footpaths, but refused to change the number of houses.

The council had already granted outline planning permission so was forced to grant approval.

Frinton councillor Nick Turner said: “I’m livid at the outcome.

“I’ve maintained it is an overdevelopment of that site, but they would not budge over having 37 houses."

Frinton Residents’ Association had also objected to the plans.

The development includes two, three and four-bedroom houses, with three homes for affordable housing and a play area for youngsters at the back of the site.

Daniel Rapson, of Persimmon Homes Essex, said: “We are delighted to have been granted planning permission following extensive negotiation with Tendring Council.

“The scheme has been amended after listening to all of the concerns raised by key stakeholders in the area.

“The new development will bring both employment and much needed affordable and entry level market housing to Frinton.

“We look forward to commencing work on site shortly, as soon as all of the relevant conditions have been cleared.”
