MORE than 80 trees of all shapes, sizes and themes packed out a church for an annual extravaganza.

Brightlingsea’s Christmas tree festival has raised more than £70,000 since it started in 2003 and this year was another bumper event, with more than 2,200 visitors coming through the doors of All Saints’ Church over the weekend.

Saint Nicholas arrived on a horse and cart, with children encouraged to learn about the Dutch version of Father Christmas and hunt for clogs hidden around the church.

The festive weekend ended with a carol service and proceeds will be split between All Saints’ and St James’ churches.

Themes included Alice in Wonderland, giant snowmen and a poignant tribute to fallen soldiers.

Festival co-ordinator Ann Berry said: “Everyone seemed to enjoy it and I think it was above average in terms of the number of visitors.

“Each year we try and do something a bit different, which is why we organised for Saint Nicholas to arrive, and it went well.

“Some of the best trees were the ones which commemorated the First World War, including one with black and white images of the conflict titled It Will All Be Over By Christmas.

“There were also two 6ft trees – one covered in red poppies and another in purple poppies to honour the animals which took part.”
