A CLACTON councillor has called on his Conservative colleagues to help poor children living in Rush Green rather than concentrating solely on improving Jaywick.

Ward councillor Danny Mayzes has called for more to be done to help deprived areas of Clacton rather than Jaywick, which is officially listed as the most deprived ward in the country.

It comes after a report published earlier this month revealed 45 per cent of children in Rush Green are living in poverty – the highest level in the district.

It compares to 44 per cent in Jaywick’s Golf Green and 40 per cent in Clacton Pier ward.

The shocking figures, published by the Campaign to End Child Poverty, are comparable to innercity areas such as London’s Bethnal Green and Manchester Central.

Mr Mayzes has now called on Tendring Council leader Mick Page to do more to help poor people in Rush Green, which includes the Percy King estate.

Council bosses have promised to regenerate Jaywick by borrowing up to £10million to build new homes.

“It is time to reel in some of the Jaywick rhetoric and direct attention to other areas of Clacton that quite clearly require support,” said Mr Mayzes.

“For the last few years, Jaywick has been seen as the place to help and while I’d like to see support continue there, Tendring Council cannot expend its bag of resources on just one area of the district.

“I am extremely concerned that my home ward has topped the findings and it, along with other Clacton wards, is being left behind in our priorities.”
