UKIP’S Douglas Carswell has labelled rail services to Clacton as “appalling”.

The former MP claims poor service is hindering the town’s economy.

UKIP transport spokesman Jill Seymour visited Clacton to speak to residents and commuters during the byelection campaign.

Mr Carswell has been demanding improvement from train operator Abellio and track operator Network Rail.

He said: “Local train services have been appalling. Enough of the excuses – we need action.

“Residents have a right to expect a reliable train service and accountability when things go wrong. Things have been going wrong, but no-one takes responsibility.

“Ministers only come to Clacton to talk trains when they want votes.

“Either we need a new track operator, a new minister, or preferably both.”

MEP Mrs Seymour added: “In order for the local economy to grow, we need a train service that people can count on.”

Conservative opponent Giles Watling said he had also been talking to Abellio about improving train services into Clacton in a bid to improve tourism.

The train operator has apologised for recent disruptions to the service.
