A MARATHON charity bike ride to raise prostate cancer awareness has smashed its £5,000 target.

Harvey Powell, from Holland-on- Sea, is delighted after the week-long ride from Wales to East Anglia raised almost £13,000 – with money still coming in.

Mr Powell, 87, and his three sons have all suffered from prostate cancer.

Sons Haydn, 65, and Malcolm, 61, survived, but their brother Kelvin lost his fight against the disease when he was 61.

Haydn and Malcom staged a 420-mile bike ride with pals from Kelvin’s home in south Wales to Malcolm’s house in Norwich.

They stopped off in London and then in Clacton to see dad Harvey. The nine-strong team of riders ended up cycling almost 500 miles after making detours to go sightseeing.

Kelvin used to play for Clacton Town FC. He only discovered he had prostate cancer three months before he died on the opening day of the London Olympics in 2012.

Mr Powell added: “The ride was very successful and has raised £12,900 for Prostate Cancer UK.

We are hoping for a little bit more and it would be nice to reach £15,000.” To donate, visit justgiving.com/Powell-haydnand malcolm
