NEW technology developed by insurance companies could be used on Essex roads.

Police and crime commissioner Nick Alston has highlighted road safety as a priority for the county as he attempts to reduce the more than 700 crashes which lead to deaths and serious injuries on the county’s roads.

As well as working on driver education schemes, he also wants to investigate new technology.

Mr Alston said: “I will look to work closely with the casualty reduction board, and be involved in decisions about the best, most practical and most affordable solutions.

“Sometimes these solutions may involve technology such as speed cameras, which may also help collect data on dangerous roads.

“I am keen to encourage the introduction of technology by insurance companies which can directly influence driver behaviour.

“Educating drivers to be more responsible, to be more aware of risk and to observe speed limits is a crucial part of making our roads safer.”
