A TOP country singer from Clacton is celebrating after his charity single scooped the 'Song of the Year' crown at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Gary Curtis saw his song Life is for the Living soar straight to No 1 in the British and Irish Hot Disc Charts.

It stayed in the top spot for an amazing eight weeks and also hit No 2 in the Worldwide Hot Disc Charts.

Now Life is for the Living has earned Gary the “Song of the Year” title from Hot Disc at the British and Country Music awards.

It was a poignant accolade for Gary, of St John's Road. He penned the track after losing his dad to oesophageal cancer.

The lyrics feature lines about his father and all the profits are going to Cancer Research UK.

Gary said: “A lot of people that have been very close to me have died from cancer.

"This track and the award is especially for my wonderful dad and of course everybody who has lost someone close to them from cancer."
