Derelict Harwich building branded an eyesore
7:30am Thursday 11th October 2012 in News
A dilapidated burnt out building has been given an “Eyesore of the Year” award.
The Harwich Town Residents Association placed a placard on railings around the burnt out building at 20 Market Street, Harwich, which reads: “Eyesore of the Year Award – First Prize.”
Tendring Council deemed the building too unsafe to live in after the top floor caught fire in April. It said the property must be demolished.
But because it lies in a conservation area, the proprietor must replace it with a similar building.
Deborah Rich, of the Harwich Town Residents’ Association, said: “The building has been deteriorating over the years but it was only when it burnt down we realised what an eyesore it is.
“But people have thought it was an eyesore before it burnt down as well. “Putting the sign up is the residents voice saying we have had enough, we are not happy about it and we want something done about it.
“We want it torn down and something put in its place, what we don’t want to have to look at is an empty building."
