DRINKERS are being urged to cut down on their boozing - and give some of the cash they save to charity.

Health bosses in Tendring have launched a new campaign in a bid to get people to give up the demon drink.

The Rethink Your Drink team want people to stop buying booze during October and keep tabs on how much money they would normally have spent.

People are then urged to give a quarter of their savings to St Helena Hospice, which has a day centre in Clacton. Spokesman Alix Sheppard said:

“Many people drink more than they would imagine over the course of a month and we hope to make people realise this with our ‘A More Sober October’ campaign.

“It is easier than you think to reduce the amount of alcohol you drink.”

She added: “If you exceed the daily alcohol limits on a regular basis, you are putting your health at risk.

“It’s a delicate subject to address because so many people who are drinking more than is good for them don’t or won’t accept their drinking habits need looking at.”

Health experts say men should not regularly drink more than 3-4 units a day while the limit for women is 2-3 units.

People should also have at least two booze-free days a week. To take part in the campaign call 0800 731 3133.
