A CAMPAIGN to posthumously award PC Dibell the George Medal for his bravery has reached the final stage.

The off-duty police was shot dead outside his Clacton home in July as he intervened in an incident.

The nomination - backed by more than 5,000 people from all over the world - will now go before a special committee at the Cabinet Office.

Campaign spokesman Brendan Foygn said: “Everyone has been overwhelmed at the level of support for this campaign, and the emotional and heart-felt comments we have received have touched everyone involved in ensuring that Ian’s courageous actions don’t go unrecognised.

“We have a very strong nomination, backed up by the support from the people of Essex, Ian’s friends, loved ones and former colleagues, and through support from all four corners of the world."
