Carswell adds support to Lives Not Knives campaign
1:00pm Thursday 27th September 2012 in News
MP Douglas Carswell has backed the Gazette’s anti-knife campaign and called for a change in policing.
He said: “People have told me that it is a perception problem in Clacton, but that is simply not true.
“We have got to recognise that there is a serious problem here at the moment.
“I think we have got to change the way Clacton is policed, and should be more aggressive in dealing with people drunk in the town centre.
“I think it will also help to talk to children in the area to reinforce the message of the dangers of carrying weapons.
“But we also need our police to be tougher in how they deal with this.
“I would like to see them making more use of stop and search powers. Carrying a knife needs to be a high-risk activity.
“People doing it need to know there could be big consequences.
“I think any campaign that could help this situation will receive strong support from any decent person in our town.”
