2012 Games exhibition at Brightlingsea sailing club

AN OLYMPIC sailing exhibition is coming to Brightlingsea at the end of the Paralympic Games.

Brightlingsea Sailing Club is hosting the Royal Yacht Association’s exhibition Our Sporting Life – Sail for Gold from September 15-30.

The free exhibition has been on display at the Olympics and Paralympics Games, and the Brightlingsea club is hosting it on behalf of the Eastern region.

Visitors can discover how Britain won its place as the world’s most successful Games sailing nation through the anecdotes, photographs and memorabilia of the men and women who made sporting history over the past 112 years.

Yachting debuted as an Olympic sport at Paris 1900, and the exhibition lets visitors into the secrets behind the sport including how the boats and the sailors themselves have changed over time.

Brightlingsea Sailing Club has strong links with the Olympics, including club member Reg White as a gold medallist, and has been able to add its own exhibits from members past and present.

The exhibition will be open from 10am to 4pm and is suitable for all ages.

Reg White died in 2010, so sadly he is no longer a club member. However, he is remembered with events such as Regfest, one of the biggest catamaran racing events in the UK, which takes place in Brightlingsea at the end of September. His Gold Medal winning partner, John Osborn, now living in Canada, was also a club member. Other club members have represented the UK at the Olympics - Robert White, Jeremy Newman, David Campbell-James, Derek Clark & Phil Crebbin (bronze medallists), Sue Hay & Debbie Jarvis. And not to forget Paralympian Hannah Stodel, who was in Beijing and at London 2012 - where she was part of the Sonar team robbed of a bronze medal by a harsh jury decision.
