Cannon installed on Jaywick's historic Martello Tower.

A FULL-SCALE cannon has been installed at the top of Jaywick’s Martello Tower pointing out to sea.

The tower was given a heritage lottery grant to boost its 200th anniversary celebrations.

Staff used the grant to put on a series of exhibitions and events at the tower, and have now capped celebrations with the installation of the ancient weapon replica.

Tower manager Kerith Ririe said: “It looks amazing. You can see it from down by the sea wall, and it has got a lot of attention.

“We are absolutely over the moon with it. I think it really helps bring the tower to life and the response from visitors has been amazing.”

The 24 pound fibre glass cannon had to be lifted to the top of the tower by a crane.

It will now be a permanent feature at the tower.
