A RESIDENTS’ association has increased its majority at a by-election despite its previous candidate standing down after only three months.

Holland Residents’ Association councillor Chris Cowlin, was elected to Tendring Council in a by-election for the St Bartholomew’s ward in March, following the death of Mary Bragg, but he quit due to personal reasons.

But Colin Winfield, who lives in Chelmsford Road, increased the party’s majority from 800 to almost 900 at the by-election on Thursday.

He received 1,042 votes, compared to just 145 for Conservative candidate Graham Townley, of Sladbury’s Lane.

The town out was down from 39.9 per cent to just 30.5 per cent.

The make-up of the Tory-led district council remains unchanged.
