AN evening of intelligent humour is in store for audiences at Frinton Summer Theatre’s second offering of the season.

Tomfoolery, adapted by Cameron Mackintosh and Robin Ray from the songs of Tom Lehrer, opens at the McGrigor Hall on Tuesday.

Lehrer, a Harvard-educated maths professor delighted millions of fans during the 50s and 60s with his dry, cynical but good-humoured attacks on the atom bomb, racism, pollution, pornography, the military, the boy scouts and even mathematics.

Nothing is sacred in this hysterical revue featuring favourites such as Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, When You Are Old and Grey, the Masochism Tango, the Old Dope Peddler, the Vatican Rag and an unforgettable Gilbert and Sullivan-esque recitation of the table of elements.

Edward Max, who runs Connaught Productions, said: “It is incredibly funny. Tom Lehrer is one of the wittiest men to write comedy in the 20th century.

“His songs are known and loved and they are just as appealing to the younger generation, who know more about political satire than anyone, as it does to the older generation it is written about.

“We haven’t had much in the way of musical theatre at Frinton Summer Theatre, but it is something we are trying bring more of into the programme. We are really looking forward to it.”

The show is directed by rising star Tom Littler, who will be returning to Frinton, along with musical director Tom Attwood. Choreography is by Frinton’s Duncan Royce.

It will star summer theatre regulars Matthew Townshend, Madeline Joseph and Tom Attwood.

Tomfoolery is on nightly from Tuesday, July 17, to Friday, at 7.45pm and on Saturday at 4.30pm and 8.15pm.
