More than 100 caught in drink-drive clampdown
2:00pm Friday 13th July 2012 in News
DANGEROUS drunk drivers are putting lives at risk with more than three a day caught in June.
Essex Police ran a zero-tolerance summer drink driving campaign during the European Championships.
There were 110 people caught for driving over the limit or refusing to give a sample.
This represents nearly five per cent of the 2,250 stopped.
More than 80 of those over the limit were men and 95 per cent were older than 25.
In the run-up to the campaign Essex Police made a plea to the public to report drink drivers.
Casualty reduction manager Adam Pipe said: "Every year I am disappointed to see that some people continue to drink and drive.
“They believe themselves to be above the law and put innocent lives at risk by getting behind the wheel under the influence.
"This year our campaign was focused on intelligence-driven areas of concern so although we tested slightly fewer drivers there were more positive results.
“We won’t tolerate those who drink and drive and are asking members of the public to help us rid our roads of such irresponsible drivers.”
