CHARITABLE fundraisers from Clacton Rotary Club have handed more than £7,000 to good causes in the town.
The club’s community services committee held its annual cheque presentation at the West Cliff Theatre. As one of the last duties as Rotary president, Nick Lee presented cheques to Clacton Inner Wheel, Tendring Specialist Stroke Services, St Helena Hospice, Clacton Sea Cadets, Tendring Scouts, and the new Army Personal Recovery Centre at Colchester.
Rotarian Des Exworth, chairman of the community committee, said: “I was pleased that all this money is going to worthy causes, but the committee is not resting on its laurels.
“This year we have already had discussion with the Salvation Army and are trying to set up a food bank.
“It is a growing need in the community”.
During the past year the club has supported Harwich mayor’s fund for the families who were victims of a fire which destroyed five homes in West Street, and also helped families affected by the gas explosion in Wellesley Road, Clacton.
The club again provided Christmas dinner and entertainment for 200 elderly and lonely residents in Clacton.
The £7,000 was raised by the club at street and supermarket collections, as well as surplus funds from running last year’s Clacton Air Show car park.
