REMEMBRANCE Sunday this year is on November 13, when we will remember and pay homage to those members of the Armed Forces who died or were disabled in service to their country.

Since 1921 the Royal British Legion’s mission has been to help those members of the serving and ex-service community who needed it. Ninety years on and the Legion continues to safeguard the welfare, interests and memory of those who are serving or who have served in the Armed Forces.

The Poppy Appeal provides the main source of funds to maintain the Legion’s many welfare and benevolent schemes, in which over 300,000 people are helped each year.

For this year’s Poppy Appeal, the Royal British Legion is again focusing its support for the Afghan generation of the Armed Forces family.

Since 2003, the Legion has helped more than 10,000 service, ex-service and family members who are part of the Afghan and Iraq conflict. With this conflict continuing, it is inevitable that this number will continue to rise.

Remembrance Day ceremonies and participation in the two minutes’ silence on November 11, each year, provide a special focus for communities to remember the sacrifices made for future generations to enjoy the freedom that was won.

May I, as chairman of Tendring Council, appeal to you to give generously in support of the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal.
