REGARDING FC Clacton (Clacton Football Club as it used to be known).
I came across a 1950s guide book covering Clacton and the surrounding villages, by Ward Lock. What was interesting about it was the pull-out map showing the then location of the football ground, close to the corner of West Avenue and Park Road (now occupied by the gas works).
What a good close-to-town location it was. The present ground was an isolation hospital, something the supporters must feel now about the ground.
What a shocking place to stick a town’s football team. Only about 100 turn up to support the club - a poor reward for all the people involved in running it.
If the town hall wallahs cared anything for football and how it promotes Clacton, they would have surely found a better place for it.
My suggestion would have been the playing field at the top end of Old Road, a very central location for the team with residential roads all around and, most importantly, a major bus route.
This locale would easily attract 300 and, if the team was riding high in the league, probably 500.
