IN response to Steven Walker’s letter (October 6), questioning the devaluing of properties surrounding the Mere, from the proposed Titchmarsh development.

The majority of those of us that live in this area are perfectly aware our properties were flooded during the 1953 floods. At the time of these floods, the then sea defences consisted of just a mud bank.

The outcome from the 1953 floods was the construction of metal and concrete defences, resulting in the protection of our properties against flooding for the past 58 years.

I do not pay any extra premiums for my home insurance, due to the fact that my property has not been flooded in the past 25 years, and also the sea defences are of a solid construction.

Mr Walker also says residents surrounding the Mere should be grateful for the extra protection provided by the new Titchmarsh sea defences. These new defences will only be protecting their own development, and will not offer extra protection for the properties of Canada Cottages.
