A GREEN campaigner is calling for residents in Tendring to oppose moves to build a new nuclear power station at Bradwell following the Japanese tsunami disaster.

Chris Southall, from Clacton, claims storm surges and rising sea levels could lead to floods on the Essex coast similar to those which have led to Japan's current N-plant nightmare.

He says Clacton residents would be in the danger zone if there was an accident at a new power station at Bradwell.

"If there had been a low pressure system over us this weekend we would have been on flood alert here," said Mr Southall.

"We could easily have had floods and that's not a good thing around nuclear power stations."

Mr Southall says the UK should learn from Japan.

He was "horrified" at reports coming out the disaster zone.

"We are within the Bradwell exclusion zone here in Clacton," said the Green Party member.

"Not many people here give that much thought to Bradwell because it's out of sight but we are quite close."

The Blackwater Against New Nuclear Group opposes proposals shortlisting Bradwell for a new N-plant. The old power station was decommissioned in 2002.

They were accused of “pseudo-intellectual scaremongering” after using the Japanese emergency problems as an argument against reviving the nuclear industry at Bradwell.

But Mr Southall says people shouldn't ignore what's happening.

"If all the factors come together with on-shore winds and low pressure it's not just pie in the sky - it's something people are taking seriously," he said.
