A TRAIN depot in Clacton is reopening after more than a decade following a £1.5million revamp.
The maintenance depot - next to the railway station - stood empty after it was closed down in the 1990s.
But now train operator National Express East Anglia has reopened the train shed after a major overhaul.
A 12-strong team will be based at the depot to carry out train repairs and cleaning. Six transferred from other parts of the company and the others have been recruited locally.
Huge lifting equipment means an entire four-carriage train can be hoisted into the air for maintenance - an operation that can't be carried out at the NXEA's main depot in Ilford.
The company says the upgrade is part of its promise to improve services to passengers and make trains more reliable.
The depot is being officially opened by Tendring Council chairman Alan Goggin today.
