Getting into that Olympic spirit

SEAFRONT beaches and green spaces will be used to host mini-Olympics, celebrating the run up to the 2012 games.

Community leaders in Jaywick will host 'Jaylympics', including beach volleyball, water sports such as windsurfing and beach kite displays.

Community leaders were keen to highlight the area's beaches and their sporting potential.

John Walton, from the Jaywick Forum, which is organising the event together with charity Coastnet, said: “We have got such an opportunity in a coastal area and the beach and water is not used to the best advantage.

“We have got a lot of ambition to take what we have got and use it for everybody.”

Mr Walton said that Jaywick beach is already popular with windsurfers, who find the winds and conditions ideal.

He hopes that the day will encourage residents to get active and get more people involved with beach and water sports.

The Jaylympics are one of a number of events in Tendring taking place on July 24-25, the same weekend as part of the 2012 Olympics.

They also include the village mini-Olympics in Alresford aimed at children and youths aimed eight to 16, and a traditional sports day run by the Mad About Theatre Company at the Clacton County High School.
