A WOMAN who helped save a starving baby cockatiel after it was discovered in a garden is appealing for its owners to come forward.
The escaped bird was found in Spenser Way on Jaywick’s Tudor estate on Monday night.
“My neighbour found it and she contacted me because I’ve got a cockatiel and she thought it was mine,” said Hayley Nelson, 42.
But the escaped cockatiel was just a youngster and had flown in from further afield They managed to trap the bird in a box.
“He was starving - really hungry,” said supermarket cashier Hayley.
“I’m surprised he survived the last couple of days because crows and magpies pick on them until they die."
The charcoal-grey bird has been handed over to the RSPCA and is now at an animal rescue centre 60 miles away near Lakeside.
Poster have been put up urging its owners to come forward but if he isn’t claimed within seven days he will be rehomed.
“I keep thinking of a little kid sitting up all night asking when their pet cockatiel will be coming home and it’s just so sad,” Hayley said.
