ARMED raiders forced a terrified cashier to open a shop safe at knifepount before escaping with more than £1,000 in cash.
The shopworker was attacked after locking up at the 7-11 store in Clacton High Street.
Two men threatened him with a knife in the nearby Arcade and forced him back into the store before ordering him to open the safe.
The cashier was bound and gagged before the robbers escaped with the cash.
A police spokesman said: "They were carrying a red or burgundy drawstring type bag and they left the store by the rear exit and walked towards Carnarvon Road. They sounded as if they were using false northern accents.
"The shop cashier was shaken and had minor injuries to his wrists where he was tied."
The raid took place at 11.20pm on Sunday.
The first robber is described as of average build, 5ft8in tall, wearing a dark coloured hoody with horizontal stripes and a dark scarf over his nose and mouth with just his eyes showing.
His accomplice was also 5ft8in and of medium to large build. He had a badly pock-marked face and wore a dark thigh-length jacket and dark coloured woolly hat.
Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact Clacton CID on 0300 333 4444 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
