Jaywick: Branded 'booze trap' by TV show

JAYWICK has been branded a booze trap for people who are down on their luck on national TV.

The resort was featured on BBC2’s Prescott: The North/South Divide on Wednesday night.

During the programme, former deputy prime minister John Prescott toured the country to see if the north really was poorer than the south.

He was taken to Jaywick, the third most deprived area in the country, to try to prove the affluent south has its poverty problems too.

A local businessman told Mr Prescott people moved to Jaywick after falling on hard times in an attempt to live cheaply and sort their cash woes out.

But the politician heard the village was a booze "trap" for the unwary.

"They come here to pay their bills and then get into the culture which is a drink culture," resident Billy Thorp-Rowe told Mr Prescott.

He said the area had once been a "no-go zone" for police and some residents were prepared to work for free just to avoid starting drinking at 11am.

"I think the programme gave a fair representation of Brooklands," said Mr Thorp-Rowe, of Brooklands.

Speaking about the booze culture, he said: "It's true - that's the way it goes down here.

"People won't employ you. It's just like a big social club down here really."

Mr Thorp-Rowe said he enjoyed chatting to the MP.

"He was a very nice, personable bloke. He was chatting off camera quite freely."

The Hull MP and former ship steward was shown around one of Jaywick's famous chalets by local estate agent James Eniffer. He was told it cost much less than a beach hut ten miles up the road in upmarket Frinton.

Mr Eniffer said Jaywick had received a rough deal in real life and on the programme.

"I don't think it was massively fair, but obviously they only had a certain time limit," said the Sheens manager.

"Mr Prescott thoughts were that regeneration had to be concentrated in the north.

"It's a great shame as Jaywick is one of the most deprived areas in the country.

"You get a variety of people down there. Sometimes it's because of financial difficulties but I wouldn't say everyone down there ends up on drink and drugs.

"It is a problem, but you get that everywhere."

Just Jim here again,

a fine piece of reporting, although short in length, it gave a true one sided view of the worse streets,
as usual.
Its nothing that we would expect to be different from the media, is it.
To be fair though, if we had the better streets of Jaywick on the telly,
one would say it does`nt need money for regeneration.
"no cash cow infact"
A well known head of a local authourity was heard to say,
"we are not looking to move people out of jaywick, but they could have other housing in the area"
and,
"it will take some years to totaly resolve the problems we face, but lets hope we can get these things going through 2010."

All this and its Harwich thats now branded as in dire need for regeneration.

Just Jim here again,
just for you red watch sid.

I will go ask the one or two cab drivers that live in Brooklands, that STILL work in good `ol Romford, just what they think of you and your cabbies eh..

Jaywick still is a lovely little village in essex, its as far away from you as residents would like to be.
I believe they would love to thank you for your due dilligence also.

Cant stop, metres running, times money you know.

Oh, for those amused enough to want to watch the north south divide, just for you,
its on tonight at 11-20 i believe.

Bottoms up...
or is that cheers...

Ironic security word redwatch sid:-

Even ol two jags looked a little nervous in the badlands. HA,HA,HA,HA.

Just Jim here again redwatch sid,

thanking you for highlighting an error,
but is it an error?
"It's spelt METERS NOT METRES."
If your measuring in KPH, I`ll think you`ll find its metres.
I cannot understand your quote of sevenoaks, not sevenkings.
It sounds like one of then TALL stories that bored cab drivers tell when all ranked up with nothing to do except sit, smoke(whatever) drink(no?) and tell each other, its OK, the phone will ring soon,
got a cab to pay for,
got commision to pay,
got insurance to pay,
got the plate renewal due soon,
got new tires to buy,
got that wonky old seatbelt to fix,
my my, the cab drivers localy have it so rich eh...lol
Ever thought of going to where the real earners go, its not walton, frinton, clacton or anywhere in a 50 mile radius of CO15 is it redwatch sid.

Sidneys smiling is a very good name,
I`ll call myself Jims just bursting at the seams with laughter..
bye - bye redwatch sid.

Oh, redwatch sid,
"tall-okay" security word is a very apt for one of your replies even eh..

I've lived in Jaywick for more years than I care to remember, but have never ever been worried about my safety walking around, whether it be midday or midnight, so where did the no go area come from? (things being stolen houses broken into is another matter)

As to the programme, IMHO it seemed very biased towards the north, in the number of places visited and the lengh of time taken over each one.

What I'd like to know is who was paying for that plane and champagne that was being drunk on it....... was it on expenses? :-)

Sidneys smiling here again,
YAWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wrong again Rusty Jim aka I burrit.
When you said "can't stop metres running" you were obviously talking about the METER in ones cab which is spelt METER not metre.
Your spelling of METRE is the metric unit of length used on the continent (1,094 yards)
The meter a cabbie uses in their cab is spelt meter it's a device for measuring and recording the length of the journey taken and what the cost of that journey will be.

Metre/meter there is a difference.

You know the Sevenoaks/Sevenkings story is true.

Crap cabbie/crap speller..........

Security word:

I am from the sunny south (Basildon) and down here we only get 1.094 yards to the meet her (did I spell that right?) Just wondered if you would consider working for our local carpet right? If I bought from you I could carpet my house and my four neighbours' for just one metre! Be careful choosing between your commas and dots please mate!
Note: I am an Evening Echo commenter. Perhaps you could visit us on there if you ever get bored pushing taxis and there drivers about (lol) xx

Sorry, "their" not "there" that's one , and Carpet Right is the other. What a twonk I am! Am I right in thinking that the "Tower" Campsite is in Jaywick? I stayed with the grandchildren there a few years agoand thought it was a nice place. Or is that somewhere else?
