A YOUNG carer was among a group of students awarded for outstanding achievements.
Grace Abbott, aged 14, cares for her wheelchair-bound mother and her father, who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. She helps around the house, and does most of the caring for her parents when they are unwell.
She was one of a group of special achievers from Tendring Technology College who were nominated by their peers for the award.
Fellow students saw how she struggles to balance home and school life and keep up with her work.
Grace said: “It was quite a shock when I found out about it, it was quite amazing that people nominated me.
“Many people do know what my home life is, and how I struggle with school with the housework.
“I was one of the people in the crowd and I did not think that anyone would notice what I have done. It is nice to know that people care about you.”
Each of the winners was presented with a certificate, a medal and £200 to spent on a school event or project. Grace chose to put her cash towards the year nine prom, which was spent on a chocolate fountain, a DJ and a decorations.
“I wanted to make it a special prom,” she explained.
The award winners were all nominated by other students and were presented with their awards at a ceremony at the school last Thursday.
