BRANTHAM Athletic midfielder Louie Newland insists there is still plenty more to come from his on-song side.

The Imps gave another signal of intent as their flying start to the season continued with a comfortable FA Cup victory at Wivenhoe Town, on Saturday.

They had already defeated Kirkley and Pakefield and neighbours Hadleigh United in Thurlow Nunn League action and made it a hat-trick of wins with a 5-0 success at the GMP Plant Hire Stadium.

It represents a near faultless start from the Leisure Centre side - and summer signing Newland insists they are only going to get better.

“With the team we’ve got, we feel confident we can beat anyone," said the former FC Clacton and Brightlingsea Regent midfielder.

“We’ve got a really good mix of young players and more experienced ones, like myself.

“We haven’t even got properly started yet but we’re already showing glimpses of what we can do.

“We’ve got players with real quality on the ball and they’re only going to get better, especially the young ones.

“They’re very good footballers and it’s encouraging that there’s more to come.

“We’ve got several new players, including myself, and we’re still learning how each other plays.

“We’re adapting all the time.

“We’ve just got to keep the momentum going, keep trying to beat whoever’s in front of us and hopefully we’ll be right up there challenging.

“I saw what the club achieved last season and was excited about coming over.

“I’ve played against this team a few times and know how talented the group is.

“It’s a pleasure to be part of and I think we can have a really successful time together, replicating last year’s achievements and hopefully winning something.”

Dan Rowe, Newland, Jack Madley, Elliott Johnson and Danny Bloomfield were on target in Saturday's extra preliminary round tie – one of 184 up and down the country last weekend - as Brantham eased through and pocketed a cool £2,250.

They now host Welwyn Garden City on Saturday week (August 25).

“In the end it was pretty comfortable but you’ve still got to beat what’s in front of you," added Newland.

“I haven’t scored in a while and really enjoyed my goal.

“Craig (Hughes) bust a gut to beat four or five players and I thought I’ve got to back him up by making the most of it!

“Luckily he heard me call for the ball and thankfully it was a sweet strike into the top corner.

“Overall, I’m really enjoying it here.

“It was a difficult decision to step down and leave Brightlingsea.

“But I knew I’d play more football here and that was a key factor in deciding to move."

Brantham are now preparing for back-to-back away games in the Thurlow Nunn League premier division, with Saturday's trip to Newmarket Town being followed by a date at Long Melford on Tuesday.
